Zip files online
Make a ZIP file in your browser: your files are never uploaded, there is no limit on how many archives you make, and you can add a password with AES-256 encryption. Drop files or a whole folder and the ZIP downloads at once.

What is a ZIP file?
A ZIP file is an archive: a single file that holds several files and folders, usually compressed so the whole is smaller. That makes it easy to email, upload or store many files at once. ZIP is the most widely used archive format, and Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS can open it without extra software.
Zipping with this tool
Drop your files or folders in the box, or click to choose them. You see a list of everything that will go in, and you can remove single files. Name the archive, choose how strongly to compress it, and click Create archive. The ZIP is downloaded at once.
Folders stay folders
Drop a folder and its structure is kept inside the ZIP. Whoever unpacks it gets exactly the same folders and files back.
How much smaller will it be?
That depends on the files. Text, spreadsheets and many documents shrink a lot. Photos (JPG), videos and PDFs are usually compressed already and hardly get smaller; the benefit of a ZIP is then mostly that everything is in one file.
Zip for email and uploads
Sending ten files is awkward; one ZIP is easy. Many mail services block or limit attachments (often around 20 to 25 MB), so check the size in the status line after you create the archive. If it is too big, split ZIP cuts it into pieces that fit. Photos, videos and PDFs are already compressed, so zipping them mostly saves you the clutter, not megabytes.
Choosing the compression level
Fast is quick and slightly bigger, Maximum is slowest and smallest, and Normal sits in between. For text, spreadsheets and source code the difference between levels is visible; for files that are compressed already it is hardly measurable.
Sharing a protected ZIP
A password makes sense when the contents are private, but the receiver needs a program that understands AES: 7-Zip, WinRAR, Keka or WinZip. The unzip function built into Windows cannot open it. Tell the receiver this, and send the password separately from the ZIP, not in the same email. If you want to make sure they can open it, extract ZIP is a good way to test the result yourself.
Prefer a smaller archive and happy with 7-Zip on the other side? RAR compressor makes 7z too. A short note inside the ZIP, such as a version number, can be added with the ZIP comment editor.
Frequently asked questions
Can I zip a whole folder?
Yes. Drop the folder or choose it, and the structure of folders is kept inside the ZIP.
Can the receiver open a ZIP with a password in Windows?
Not with the built-in unzip. AES-protected ZIPs need 7-Zip, WinRAR, WinZip or, on a Mac, Keka. Leave the password empty if everyone has to open it without extra software.
Is there a maximum size?
There is no fixed limit. Archiving happens in your browser's memory, so several gigabytes can be too much for a phone.
Are my files uploaded?
No. The ZIP is made on your own device, and no file is sent or stored.
