Create a TAR archive online
Create a TAR or TAR.GZ archive in your browser: your files are never uploaded, there is no limit on how many archives you make, and folders keep their structure. Choose TAR.GZ for a compressed result.

How it works
-
Choose your files
Drop files or whole folders in the box, or click to choose them.
-
Choose the settings
Name the archive and choose the format and compression.
-
Create the archive
Click Create archive; the file is downloaded at once.
TAR or TAR.GZ?
- TAR puts files in one archive without compressing them. The result is about as large as the originals.
- TAR.GZ is a TAR archive compressed with gzip, the standard for software and backups on Linux and macOS.
Using the tool
Drop your files or folders in the box, or click to choose them. The folder structure is kept. Name the archive, pick the format and click Create archive; the download starts at once.
When TAR is the right choice
TAR is the standard bundle on Linux and macOS, used for source code releases, backups and moving a directory tree between systems. Many build and deploy tools, container images and package formats expect a .tar or .tar.gz. If the receiver uses Windows and has nothing special installed, a ZIP is the easier choice: see zip files.
A tip on size
A plain TAR is about as large as the files you put in, because it does not compress. If you want it smaller, pick TAR.GZ. Text, code and logs shrink a lot; photos and videos hardly at all. For one single file, gzip compressor is the more direct tool.
Limits of a browser-made TAR
A browser knows file names and contents, but not Unix permissions or owners, so those are not in the archive. An extracted shell script may need chmod +x before you can run it. For sharing documents and source code that does not matter.
To check what you made, open it with extract TAR.
Private by design
Your files are archived on your own device. Nothing is uploaded.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between TAR and TAR.GZ?
TAR only bundles, TAR.GZ also compresses with gzip. Choose TAR.GZ when size matters.
Are Unix permissions stored?
No. A browser has no access to permissions or owners, so the TAR contains only names and contents.
Can the receiver open it on Windows?
Windows 11 can open .tar and .tar.gz in recent updates, and programs such as 7-Zip always can. A ZIP is the safest choice when you are not sure.
Are my files uploaded?
No. The archive is created on your own device and nothing is sent anywhere.
