Extract gzip files online
Decompress a .gz file in your browser: nothing is uploaded, there is no limit on how many files you open, and a TAR archive inside (.tar.gz, .tgz) is opened so you can pick its files.

Also works with ZIP, RAR, 7z, TAR, GZ, BZ2 and XZ
How it works
-
Choose your Gzip file
Drop the archive in the box or choose it on your device.
-

You see all files with their folders and sizes straight away. Protected? Enter the password.

Download
File by file, or everything at once as a ZIP.
What is a gzip file?
Gzip compresses a single file. It is everywhere on the web and on Linux: log files, database dumps, downloads and web pages are often served as .gz. A .tar.gz (or .tgz) is a TAR archive that has been gzipped, to bundle many files.
Decompressing a gzip file
Drop the .gz file in the box. A single file is unpacked and offered for download, with the .gz removed from its name. A TAR archive inside is opened so you can pick files from it or download everything as a ZIP.
Logs, dumps and downloads
You mostly meet .gz files as server logs (access.log.gz), database dumps (backup.sql.gz), exported datasets and downloads from Linux software sites. They are often large text files, which is where gzip does very well: a log file of 200 MB can be only a few megabytes as a .gz.
What comes out
For a plain .gz you get one file, named like the original with the .gz removed: backup.sql.gz becomes backup.sql. If that file is text, you can preview the start of it before you download. Archives inside, such as the TAR in a .tar.gz, are opened as a list of files.
Very large files
Decompression is done in the memory of your browser. A dump that is several gigabytes after unpacking can be too much, particularly on a phone. For those, use gunzip or zcat on the command line.
Want to go the other way? Gzip compressor makes a .gz from your file. For a bundle of files, see extract TAR and create a TAR archive.
Private by design
Decompression happens on your own device. Your file is not uploaded.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between .gz and .tar.gz?
A .gz compresses a single file. A .tar.gz is a TAR archive of many files that was compressed with gzip.
Can I open a .gz of several gigabytes?
It depends on your device. The file is unpacked in browser memory, so on a computer with enough memory it can work, but a phone will struggle. Use gunzip on the command line for very large files.
Does it keep the original file name?
Yes, without the .gz. A file called data.csv.gz is saved as data.csv.
Is my gzip file uploaded?
No. It is decompressed on your own device and nothing is sent anywhere.
