What is a 7z file?
7z is the archive format of the program 7-Zip. It often compresses harder than ZIP, which makes large collections of files smaller. Windows and macOS don't always open 7z files themselves; normally you need an extra program. With this tool you don't.
Opening a 7z file

Password-protected 7z
7-Zip can encrypt archives with AES-256, sometimes the file names too. The tool asks for the password. Without the right one the contents can't be opened, not even by us, because the unpacking happens on your own device.
Large archives
Unpacking happens in your browser's memory. Archives of hundreds of megabytes are usually fine on a computer; a very large one may be too much for a phone.
Why a 7z is sometimes slow or heavy
7z archives are often "solid": the files are compressed together as one block, which makes the archive small but means the tool has to unpack a large part of it to reach even a single file. A big solid archive therefore takes a moment and needs plenty of memory. On a computer this is rarely a problem; on a phone, a very large 7z may not open.
Hidden file names
With 7-Zip you can encrypt the file names as well as the contents. In that case you see nothing at all until you have entered the password, which is why the tool asks for it right away instead of showing an empty list.
Passing it on
A 7z is smaller than a ZIP, but not everyone can open one. If the person you send the files to has no 7-Zip, use Download all to get a ZIP and send that instead, or make one yourself with zip files. Compressing files to 7z is possible too, with RAR compressor, which makes ZIP or 7z.

Do I need 7-Zip installed?
No. The tool contains 7-Zip as WebAssembly and runs it in your browser, so there is nothing to install.
Can it open a 7z with encrypted file names?
Yes, if you know the password. The names only appear once the archive is unlocked.
Why does my large 7z not open on my phone?
The archive is unpacked in the memory of your device. Very large or solid 7z files can need more than a phone has. Try a computer.
Is my 7z file uploaded?
No. It is unpacked on your own device and nothing is stored or sent.
