Opening a ZIP file

Drop the ZIP file in the box or click to choose it. The tool opens the archive in your browser and lists every file with its folder and size. Click a name to preview an image or a text file. Download saves one file; Download all saves everything as a new ZIP.

Password-protected ZIP

If the ZIP file is protected, the tool asks for the password. It works with the old ZIP password and with AES encryption. Without the right password, a protected archive can't be opened.

Why extract online?

Most computers open a ZIP file with a double click. Online extraction helps on a Chromebook, a work laptop without admin rights, or a phone where you need one file from a large archive. Because it all runs in your browser, the archive never leaves your device.

When a ZIP will not open

  • A wrong or missing password. The tool asks for the password as soon as the archive turns out to be protected, and says so if the one you typed is wrong. Without the right password the contents cannot be opened.
  • A damaged or unfinished download. If the download was interrupted, the end of the ZIP is missing and the list stays empty. Download the file again.
  • A split archive. A ZIP that was cut into parts (.z01, .z02 and so on) cannot be opened one part at a time.

Check before you open

An unknown ZIP can contain anything. Look at the list of names first: a file called invoice.pdf.exe is a program, not a document, and you can preview images and text here without ever running anything. Only download what you recognise.

Frequently asked questions

Can I open a password-protected ZIP without the password?

No. The password is needed to decrypt the files, and this tool cannot get around it. If you know the password, type it when the tool asks.

Does it work on a phone or a Chromebook?

Yes, in any current browser. The archive is unpacked in the memory of your device, so a very large ZIP can be too much for a phone.

Which ZIP passwords are supported?

Both the old ZIP password and AES encryption, as made by 7-Zip and WinZip.

Is my ZIP file uploaded?

No. The archive is opened by 7-Zip running as WebAssembly in your browser. The file and its contents never leave your device and nothing is stored.
