Add a comment to a ZIP file
Add, change or remove the comment of a ZIP file in your browser: nothing is uploaded, and only the comment at the end of the archive is rewritten, so the files inside stay exactly as they were.
Drop your ZIP file here
The comment is shown by programs such as WinRAR and 7-Zip, and by unzip -z.
How it works
-
Choose your ZIP file
Drop the ZIP file in the box; you see any existing comment at once.
-
Write the comment
Type a description, a version or other information.
-
Save
Download the ZIP file with the new comment.
Where do you see it?
Programs such as 7-Zip and WinRAR show the comment when you open the archive, and on the command line you can read it with unzip -z. Some programs don't show it at all, but it stays in the file.
Using the tool
Drop a ZIP file in the box, type the comment and click Save and download. To get rid of a comment, click Remove comment. Because only the end of the file is rewritten, the rest of the archive is not recompressed or touched.
What a ZIP comment is good for
A comment is a short text that travels with the archive. Useful things to put in it:
- a version number or build date ("release 2.4, 14 March");
- a licence or copyright line;
- contact details or a link to the site the archive came from;
- a note to the receiver, such as "password sent by SMS".
It is limited to 65,535 bytes, plenty for a few lines.
Do not put secrets in it
The comment is not encrypted, even in a password-protected ZIP: anybody can read it without the password. Use it for information that is meant to be seen.
Why the files are not touched
Many tools rebuild the whole archive when you change something, which is slow and recompresses everything. A ZIP stores the comment at the very end, so this tool only replaces that last part. Your files, their dates and their compression stay byte for byte the same, so it is also safe for large archives.

Private by design
Everything happens in your browser. Your ZIP file is not uploaded.

Where do I see the comment afterwards?
In 7-Zip and WinRAR when you open the archive, and on the command line with unzip -z. Some programs do not show it, but it is still in the file.

Do the files in my ZIP change?
No. Only the end of the file with the comment is rewritten.
Is my ZIP file uploaded?
No. It is edited in your browser and nothing is sent anywhere.
