RAR compressor online

Compressing to RAR is not possible online, because only WinRAR may create RAR files; this tool makes a ZIP or 7z archive instead, in your browser. Nothing is uploaded, there is no limit on how many archives you make, and you can add an AES password.

Nobody can make RAR files online. The RAR format belongs to the makers of WinRAR, and only WinRAR may create RAR files. That is why this tool makes a ZIP or 7z archive: ZIP opens on every computer, and 7z is often smaller and opens in WinRAR too.

How it works

  1. Choose your files

Drop files or whole folders in the box, or click to choose them.

  2. Choose the settings

Name the archive and choose the format and compression.

  3. Create the archive

Click Create archive; the file is downloaded at once.

Compression level

Choose Fast for a quick result, Normal for a good balance, or Maximum for the smallest file, which takes longer. Files that are already compressed, such as JPG photos, videos and PDFs, hardly get smaller at any level.

Password protection

Both formats can be protected with a password, using AES-256. With 7z the file names are hidden too. The receiver needs a program that can open encrypted archives.

Which to choose when someone asks for RAR

If someone asked you to send a RAR file, they almost always only need a compressed archive that they can open. WinRAR, 7-Zip, Keka and most other tools open both ZIP and 7z. Choose ZIP when the receiver might have nothing installed (phones, Chromebooks, office computers) and 7z when file size matters and you know they have 7-Zip or WinRAR.

ZIP or 7z compared

ZIP 7z
Opens without extra software Windows, macOS, Android, iOS usually not
Size good often smaller
Password AES-256 AES-256, file names hidden too

Opening RAR files is another matter

You can open RAR files without restriction. Extract RAR does that in your browser, including RAR5, and can give you a ZIP of the contents. To create a plain ZIP directly, see zip files, and for a Unix-style bundle create a TAR archive.

Private by design

The archive is made in your browser. Your files are not uploaded.

Frequently asked questions

Why can't I create a RAR file?

The RAR format is owned by the makers of WinRAR, and only their software is allowed to create it. Opening RAR files is permitted.

Is 7z as good as RAR?

In most cases yes: 7z often compresses as well or better than RAR and is free. The catch is that not everybody can open it without installing a program.

Are 7z file names hidden when I use a password?

Yes, for 7z the file names are encrypted along with the contents.

Are my files uploaded?

No. The archive is made on your own device and nothing is sent anywhere.
