Gzip compressor online
Compress a file with gzip in your browser: nothing is uploaded, there is no limit on how many files you compress, and you choose the compression level. Several files or a folder become a .tar.gz.

How it works
-
Choose your files
Drop files or whole folders in the box, or click to choose them.
-
Choose the settings
Name the archive and choose the format and compression.
-
Create the archive
Click Create archive; the file is downloaded at once.
Compression level
Pick Fast, Normal or Maximum. A higher level makes a smaller file but takes longer; for a single file you'll rarely notice the wait.
What gzip is best at
Gzip works on text. HTML, CSS, JavaScript, JSON, XML, CSV, SQL dumps and log files often shrink to a fifth of their size or less, because they repeat a lot. A file that is compressed already, such as a JPG, an MP3, a video or a ZIP, barely changes, and the .gz can even be a few bytes larger.
Gzip and websites
Web servers compress pages with gzip on the fly so they download faster, and some servers can serve a pre-compressed .gz file next to your original. Doing this takes a server setting; a compressed file alone does not speed up a website. For images on a website, see the image converters instead.
One file, or an archive?
Gzip compresses one file at a time. With several files, the tool first bundles them into a TAR and then gzips that, which gives a .tar.gz. If you want a bundle that everyone can open, make a ZIP with zip files.
Do you have a .gz and need the content? Extract gzip decompresses it. For a TAR without compression, see create a TAR archive.
Private by design
The compression happens in your browser. The file is not uploaded.
Frequently asked questions
Which files shrink well with gzip?
Text-based files: HTML, CSS, JavaScript, JSON, XML, CSV, SQL and logs. Photos, videos, MP3 and ZIP files are compressed already and gain almost nothing.
Which level should I choose?
Normal is fine for most files. Maximum gives a slightly smaller file but takes longer, which you only notice with large files.
Can I gzip several files at once?
Yes, but gzip itself handles one file, so the tool makes a .tar.gz of them.
Is my file uploaded?
No. The compression happens in your browser and the file stays on your device.
