TIFF to BMP converter

Convert TIFF to BMP in your browser: your files are never uploaded, there is no limit on how many you convert, and transparent areas are filled with a background colour of your choice. Drop in one TIFF or a whole batch and download the BMP files straight away.

    TIFF to BMP

BMP has no transparency; see-through areas get this colour.

Everything happens in your browser. Your files are not uploaded.

    How it works

    1. Choose your TIFF files

Drop them into the box, choose them on your device or paste with Ctrl+V.

    2. Converted automatically

Each file is converted to BMP straight away in your browser.

    3. Download

File by file, or everything at once as a ZIP file.

    Two old formats, one bridge

TIFF and BMP are both uncompressed pixel formats, so the file size barely changes. People convert from one to the other when a program can open one but not the other: older Windows software and embedded devices often load BMP only, while TIFF is what scanners and print programs produce.

    Transparency and colours

BMP has no transparency. If your TIFF has an alpha channel, the transparent areas are filled with the colour under Background, white by default. Scans usually have no alpha channel, so you will not notice. The result is a 24-bit RGB bitmap, which every program that reads BMP understands.

    A multi-page TIFF

When a TIFF contains several images, such as a thumbnail and a full scan, the converter uses the largest one. To get another page, save it as its own TIFF first.

    Is it the right route?

If the target program also reads PNG, then TIFF to PNG gives a much smaller lossless file. If it needs a file you can email, TIFF to JPG is the answer. Use BMP when nothing else will do. Large scans can also be reduced first with shrink image when the destination only needs a small bitmap.

    Frequently asked questions

Why is the BMP about as large as the TIFF?

Both store pixels without compression, so the size follows the pixel count in either format.

    Is quality lost?

No. The pixels are copied. Only transparency, if there was any, is replaced by the background colour.

Which page of a multi-page TIFF is used?

The largest image in the file.

    Is my TIFF uploaded?

No. The BMP is made in your browser, so the TIFF never leaves your device. A TIFF can be tens of megabytes, so converting on your own device also saves the upload time. There is no limit on file size or number of files, apart from your device's memory.
