PNG to BMP converter

Convert PNG to BMP in your browser: your files are never uploaded, there is no limit on how many you convert, and transparent areas are filled with a background colour of your choice. Drop in one PNG or a whole batch and download the BMP files straight away.

    PNG to BMP

BMP has no transparency; see-through areas get this colour.

Everything happens in your browser. Your files are not uploaded.

    How it works

    1. Choose your PNG files

Drop them into the box, choose them on your device or paste with Ctrl+V.

    2. Converted automatically

Each file is converted to BMP straight away in your browser.

    3. Download

File by file, or everything at once as a ZIP file.

    The background colour matters

BMP cannot store transparency, so everything that is transparent in your PNG must become a colour. Pick it with the Background setting; it starts at white. A logo that sits on a coloured page should get that same colour, otherwise you will see a light box around it. Soft edges, such as drop shadows and anti-aliased outlines, blend into the colour you choose, so choose it before you convert rather than afterwards.

    Why BMP at all

Some older or specialised software only loads bitmaps: Windows programs from the 1990s and 2000s, splash screens and installer graphics, embedded displays and microcontroller kits, and certain game or modding tools. For everything on the web, PNG is smaller and better.

    Size and quality

A BMP stores 3 bytes for every pixel with no compression, so a 1920 × 1080 screenshot is about 6 MB, where the PNG was perhaps a few hundred kilobytes. The picture itself is not changed: PNG and BMP are both lossless, so what you see in the PNG is exactly what the BMP holds.

If the target needs a particular size, shrink image or enlarge image first. If you need a bitmap of a photo, JPG to BMP does the same for JPG files. If you only need to remove transparency for a program that dislikes it, PNG to JPG gives a much smaller file.

    Frequently asked questions

What happens to the transparent parts of my PNG?

They are filled with the background colour under the settings, white by default. Choose the colour that matches where you will use the BMP.

Why is the BMP so large?

A BMP stores every pixel without compression, around three bytes per pixel. A PNG compresses the same data without losing anything, which is why it is much smaller.

    Is any quality lost?

No. Both formats are lossless, so the pixels are identical. Only the transparency is replaced by a colour.

    Is my PNG uploaded?

No. The BMP is made in your browser, so the PNG never leaves your device. Screenshots and designs often hold things you would rather not share, and here they stay with you. There is no limit on file size or number of files, apart from your device's memory.
