TIFF to AVIF converter

Convert TIFF to AVIF in your browser: your files are never uploaded, there is no limit on how many you convert, and a heavy TIFF becomes a small web image, with the quality you set. Drop in one TIFF or a whole batch and download the AVIF files straight away.

    TIFF to AVIF

    60

Lower makes the file smaller, higher keeps more detail.

Everything happens in your browser. Your files are not uploaded.

    How it works

    1. Choose your TIFF files

Drop them into the box, choose them on your device or paste with Ctrl+V.

    2. Converted automatically

Each file is converted to AVIF straight away in your browser.

    3. Download

File by file, or everything at once as a ZIP file.

From archive file to web image

A TIFF from a scanner or a print workflow is often tens of megabytes, which is far too heavy for a web page. AVIF is among the most efficient formats for showing the same picture online, so the difference can be dramatic. It is a good last step after you have finished editing and archived the TIFF.

    Shrink before you encode

AVIF is slow to produce, and a 6000 pixel wide scan takes a while. If the picture will be shown at 1200 pixels, use shrink image on the TIFF first, or convert and let your page serve a smaller copy. Smaller input makes the conversion several times faster, and the file smaller still.

    Settings and caveats

    • Quality starts at 60, a good setting for AVIF. Scanned documents and line drawings with thin text can show faint noise around letters; raise the slider to 80 or more for those.
    • Pages. For a TIFF with more than one image, the largest one is used.
    • The encoder is about 3.4 MB and loads from this site the first time you use AVIF.
    • Fallback. Some software cannot read AVIF. For a format that works almost everywhere, use TIFF to JPG.

Keep your TIFF as the master copy: AVIF is for showing the picture, not for archiving it.

    Frequently asked questions

How much smaller will the AVIF be?

A lot smaller: TIFF is usually uncompressed, so the AVIF is often a small fraction of its size. The size summary shows the exact change for each file.

My TIFF has several pages. Which one is converted?

The largest image in the file. Save other pages as separate files first if you need them.

    Will I lose quality?

AVIF is lossy, so some detail is lost, but at the default setting it is hard to see for photos. Raise the quality for scans of text.

    Is my TIFF uploaded?

No. The AVIF is made in your browser, so the TIFF never leaves your device. A TIFF can be tens of megabytes, so converting on your own device also saves the upload time. The AVIF encoder (about 3.4 MB) is loaded from this site the first time you use it; your image is not sent along.
