Why turn a JPG into an AVIF

AVIF is a newer image format that keeps the same visual quality as a JPG at a clearly smaller file size, which makes pages load faster and saves bandwidth. It is the format to try when a photo-heavy page is slow. Current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari can all show AVIF files.

    Choosing the quality

The slider starts at 60, which is a good balance for AVIF; the same number in a JPG would look much worse. Lower it to shrink the file further, raise it when the photo has smooth gradients such as a sky, where banding shows first. Check the size summary next to each file: it shows the size before and after, so you can see what you gain.

    Things to know

    • The encoder loads once. The AVIF encoder is about 3.4 MB and is downloaded from this site the first time you use it. After that it works from your browser cache.
    • Big photos take longer. AVIF is slower to produce than JPG, so a 24 megapixel photo can need a few seconds. Shrink image first if you only need web size.
    • Keep your JPG. Some older software and email clients cannot open AVIF. On a website, serve the AVIF with the JPG as fallback, or choose JPG to WebP, which has even wider support.

    Frequently asked questions

How much smaller will the AVIF be?

It depends on the photo and the quality you choose, but at a similar look an AVIF is typically a lot smaller than the JPG it came from. The size summary under each file shows the exact change for your image.

Can I use AVIF on my website?

Yes. All current major browsers support it. Keep the JPG as a fallback with a picture element if you need to reach very old browsers.

    Does AVIF support transparency?

The format does, but a JPG has none to carry over, so the result has the same solid background as your photo.

    Is my JPG uploaded?

No. The AVIF is made in your browser, so the JPG never leaves your device. Photos are often private, and here they stay that way. The AVIF encoder (about 3.4 MB) is loaded from this site the first time you use it; your image is not sent along.
