The easy win for a faster website

WebP files are usually clearly smaller than a JPG with the same look, and every current browser can show them. Replacing the JPG images on a page with WebP is one of the simplest ways to make it load faster, which also helps in search engines that measure page speed.

    Choosing the quality

The slider starts at 85, which keeps photos looking the same to most eyes. Lower it step by step and watch the size summary under each file; stop when you start to see smudging in smooth areas or around text. For a large hero image you can often go below 80, for a product photo that visitors zoom in on, stay higher.

    Good to know

    • Convert from the best source. A JPG that has already been compressed hard loses a little more detail when it is turned into a lossy WebP. If you still have the original, convert that instead.
    • Keep the JPG for old software. Email programs, older editors and some upload forms do not accept WebP. WebP to JPG turns it back when needed.
    • Even smaller? JPG to AVIF goes further, but encodes more slowly and is a little less widely supported.
    • Resize first. A photo that is 4000 pixels wide but shown at 800 pixels carries a lot of unused data. Shrink image fixes that before you convert.

    Frequently asked questions

    Do all browsers support WebP?

Yes, all current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari do. Some email clients and older programs do not, so keep the JPG when you need it there.

How much smaller is WebP than JPG?

It varies per image and quality setting, but a noticeably smaller file at a similar look is typical. The size summary under each file shows the exact difference.

    Will I lose quality?

A little, since both formats are lossy. At the default quality of 85 the difference is hard to see. Raise the slider if you spot any.

    Is my JPG uploaded?

No. The WebP is made in your browser, so the JPG never leaves your device. Photos are often private, and here they stay that way. There is no limit on file size or number of files, apart from your device's memory.
