A smaller PNG for the web

WebP supports transparency like PNG, but its files are normally much smaller, especially for pictures with photo-like areas or soft shadows. Swapping PNG for WebP on a website cuts download size without losing the transparent background, and every current browser can display it.

    Quality setting

The slider starts at 85. At that level most images look identical to the original. For logos and screenshots with thin text, raise it to 90 or more and compare the preview with the original. For large illustrations or product photos you can often go lower. The size summary under each file shows the exact gain.

    What to watch

    • Flat graphics. A PNG with a few flat colours is already small. The WebP can be only a little smaller, and a lossy version may add faint noise around sharp edges. Compare before you replace.
    • Compatibility. Email programs, some CMSs and older editors do not read WebP. Keep the PNG for those, or use WebP to PNG to get it back.
    • Even smaller. PNG to AVIF is slower to make and a little less widely supported, but smaller still.
    • Resize first. An image displayed at 600 pixels does not need to be 3000 pixels wide. Shrink image removes that excess before you convert.

    Frequently asked questions

Does WebP keep the transparency of my PNG?

    Yes, including soft, semi-transparent edges.

Is WebP lossy or lossless here?

The quality slider controls it: lower values give smaller, lossy files. At 85 differences are hard to see. Raise it to get closer to the original.

Can I use the WebP on my website?

Yes, all current browsers support it. Keep the PNG as a fallback if you must support very old browsers or email clients.

    Is my PNG uploaded?

No. The WebP is made in your browser, so the PNG never leaves your device. Screenshots and designs often hold things you would rather not share, and here they stay with you. There is no limit on file size or number of files, apart from your device's memory.
