Smaller files, transparency intact
AVIF can store a transparent background just like PNG, but in a much smaller file when the picture is photographic or has soft shading. That makes it a good choice for product images with a cut-out background, hero graphics and screenshots of apps with shadows.
Lossy, so check text and sharp edges
A PNG is lossless, AVIF is not. At the default quality of 60 a photo looks the same to most eyes, but thin lines, small text and hard edges on flat colours can get a faint halo. For screenshots and logos, raise the slider to 80 or more and compare the result next to the original in the preview. For flat graphics with few colours, a PNG can even be smaller than the AVIF, so look at the size summary before you decide.
Practical notes
- The encoder loads once. It is about 3.4 MB and comes from this site the first time you use AVIF.
- Offer a fallback. Very old browsers and many apps cannot open AVIF. For websites, keep the PNG or use PNG to WebP, which is supported almost everywhere.
- Go smaller first. A 4000 pixel wide screenshot shown at 800 pixels wastes data. Use shrink image before you convert.
- Starting from a JPG? JPG to AVIF is the matching tool for photos.
Frequently asked questions
Is the transparency of my PNG kept?
Yes. Transparent and semi-transparent areas are stored in the AVIF, including soft shadows.
Why does my AVIF show faint halos around text?
AVIF is lossy and sharp edges between flat colours are where you notice it first. Raise the quality slider, or keep the PNG for screenshots with a lot of text.
Do all browsers show AVIF?
All current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari do. Older browsers and some programs do not, so keep a PNG or WebP fallback if you need to reach them.
Is my PNG uploaded?
No. The AVIF is made in your browser, so the PNG never leaves your device. Screenshots and designs often hold things you would rather not share, and here they stay with you. The AVIF encoder (about 3.4 MB) is loaded from this site the first time you use it; your image is not sent along.
