PNG to GIF converter

Convert PNG to GIF in your browser: your files are never uploaded, there is no limit on how many you convert, and the GIF uses a palette of up to 256 colours and keeps transparent areas. Drop in one PNG or a whole batch and download the GIF files straight away.

    PNG to GIF

Everything happens in your browser. Your files are not uploaded.

    How it works

    1. Choose your PNG files

Drop them into the box, choose them on your device or paste with Ctrl+V.

    2. Converted automatically

Each file is converted to GIF straight away in your browser.

    3. Download

File by file, or everything at once as a ZIP file.

    Good for flat graphics

A GIF holds at most 256 colours, which is plenty for logos, icons, diagrams and pixel art. Those images usually convert from PNG without any visible change, and the GIF is often just as small. Photos and smooth gradients do not fare as well: they show banding and grain.

    Transparency is on or off

A PNG can be partly transparent, for example a soft shadow. A GIF pixel is either fully transparent or fully opaque. Semi-transparent edges therefore turn into hard edges, and on a different background colour you can see a rough fringe. If your image has soft shadows, use PNG or PNG to WebP instead. For a logo with crisp edges there is no problem.

    Before you convert

    • Reduce the picture to the size you need with shrink image: fewer pixels means a smaller GIF.
    • Check the preview at 100%. If you see banding in gradients, the image has too many colours for a GIF.
    • This converter produces a still image. It does not create animations.

Need to go the other way, for example because a program saved a GIF? Use the GIF converters from the image tools overview. For a lossless but fuller-colour alternative, keep the PNG.

    Frequently asked questions

    Is the transparency kept?

Yes, but as on or off. Fully transparent pixels stay transparent, and partly transparent edges become either solid or see-through.

Why do my colours look different?

A GIF can use only 256 colours. The tool picks the best palette it can for your image, but images with many colours or smooth gradients lose some of them.

Can I make an animated GIF?

No. This tool converts each picture to a single still GIF.

    Is my PNG uploaded?

No. The GIF is made in your browser, so the PNG never leaves your device. Screenshots and designs often hold things you would rather not share, and here they stay with you. There is no limit on file size or number of files, apart from your device's memory.
