Remove accents from text

Remove accents and other diacritics from your text: café becomes cafe, Zürich becomes Zurich and crème brûlée becomes creme brulee. Everything runs in your browser and nothing is uploaded.

How it works

  1. Paste your text

Type or paste the text in the left box, or open a .txt file. No text to hand? Click Example.

  2. Instant result

The result appears as you type. Change the options and see straight away what changes.

  3. Copy or download

Copy the result with one click, save it as a file or use it as input for a next step.

Examples

Input Result
café, naïve cafe, naive
Zürich, jalapeño Zurich, jalapeno
Ærøskøbing AEroskobing
Łódź Lodz
Straße Strasse

When you need it

  • Search and matching: finding Zoë when someone typed Zoe.
  • File names and URLs: older systems and many web addresses expect plain ASCII letters.
  • Sorting and comparing names across spellings.
  • Legacy systems that show ? or garbled letters for accented characters.

Take care with meaning

An accent can change a word: año is a year and ano is something else in Spanish, and côte and côté are different words in French. Use the result for matching and file names, not for text people have to read. For a complete URL slug, the slug generator also lowercases and joins the words. To see what a piece of text really contains, convert it with text to Unicode.

Frequently asked questions

Which letters are changed?

Latin letters with accents, cedillas, umlauts and similar marks: é, ü, ñ, ç, å and so on. Special letters are transcribed: ø becomes o, æ becomes ae, ß becomes ss and ł becomes l. Marks of other scripts, such as Devanagari or Arabic, are left alone.

Does Müller become Muller or Mueller?

Muller. The tool only removes the mark. German names for systems that need the transcription, such as Mueller, have to be replaced by hand or with [find and replace](/en/text/find-and-replace-text).

Can I get the accents back afterwards?

No. Removing an accent loses information: `año` and `ano` are different words. Keep the original text if you may need it.

Can I also lowercase the result or remove punctuation?

Yes, with the options *Also make everything lowercase* and *Also remove punctuation*. The note under the result tells you how many letters were changed.
