Text to ASCII converter

Look up the code of every character in your text. Letters, digits and punctuation give their ASCII number, and characters outside ASCII are written as their Unicode number or as UTF-8 bytes, whichever you choose. The conversion runs in your browser and nothing is uploaded.

How it works

  1. Paste your text

Type or paste the text in the left box, or open a .txt file. No text to hand? Click Example.

  2. Instant result

The result appears as you type. Change the options and see straight away what changes.

  3. Copy or download

Copy the result with one click, save it as a file or use it as input for a next step.

Example

Hello é😀 gives 72 101 108 108 111 32 233 128512 with the Unicode number setting: the five letters and the space are ASCII, é is 233 and the emoji is 128512. With UTF-8 bytes the same text gives 72 101 108 108 111 32 195 169 240 159 152 128. The note under the result tells how many characters fall outside ASCII.

A few codes to know

Character Code
space 32
0 to 9 48 to 57
A to Z 65 to 90
a to z 97 to 122
new line 10

A capital and its small letter differ by exactly 32.

The same numbers in other bases are in text to hexadecimal and text to binary. For code points in notations such as U+00E9 or é, use text to Unicode.

Frequently asked questions

What is ASCII?

A table of 128 characters, numbered 0 to 127: the English letters, digits, punctuation and some control codes. `A` is 65, `a` is 97, `0` is 48 and a space is 32.

What happens with é and emoji, which are outside ASCII?

You choose. *Unicode number* writes the code point (é is 233 and 😀 is 128512). *UTF-8 bytes* writes the bytes that encode it (é is 195 169).

Can I get the codes with commas?

Yes, choose *Comma* as the separator, which gives `72, 101, 108` instead of `72 101 108`. This is handy for pasting into source code.

How do I turn codes back into text?

For hexadecimal bytes use [hex to text](/en/text/hex-to-text), and for binary use [binary to text](/en/text/binary-to-text). Unicode numbers can be decoded with [unicode to text](/en/text/unicode-to-text).
