When a place only takes GIF
Some forums, chat programs, signature fields and older content systems accept GIF but not WebP. Convert here to get an image into such a place. For graphics with flat colours, such as logos, icons and diagrams, the GIF looks the same as the WebP.
What you lose
GIF can show only 256 colours, so photos and gradients get banding and grain. Transparency is kept but only as fully on or off, so the soft edges of a cut-out become hard, and you may see a light fringe on a dark background. Because this tool makes still images, an animated WebP will not come out as an animated GIF; you get a single picture.
Making a better GIF
- Reduce first. Fewer pixels give a smaller file and less visible banding. Use shrink image to bring the picture to the size you need.
- Check the preview at 100% before downloading. If it looks grainy, the picture has too many colours for GIF.
- Photos. For a photo, a JPG is the better small format: use WebP to JPG.
- Graphics with soft shadows. Use WebP to PNG, which keeps full transparency.
Frequently asked questions
Can I convert an animated WebP to an animated GIF?
No. This tool creates a still image and does not process animation.
Why do the edges look hard?
GIF has no partial transparency, so soft edges are rounded to transparent or opaque.
Why does my photo look grainy as a GIF?
A GIF has only 256 colours and mixes them in a pattern to imitate the rest. That is visible in photos and gradients.
Is my WebP uploaded?
No. The GIF is made in your browser, so the WebP never leaves your device. Images saved from the web stay as private as any other file on your device. There is no limit on file size or number of files, apart from your device's memory.
