JPG to SVG converter

Convert JPG to SVG in your browser: your files are never uploaded, there is no limit on how many you convert, and you choose between an exact copy inside an SVG or a traced vector version. Drop in one JPG or a whole batch and download the SVG files straight away.

    Kind of SVG

Everything happens in your browser. Your files are not uploaded.

    How it works

    1. Choose your JPG files

Drop them into the box, choose them on your device or paste with Ctrl+V.

    2. Converted automatically

Each file is converted to SVG straight away in your browser.

    3. Download

File by file, or everything at once as a ZIP file.

    Two kinds of SVG

An SVG normally holds shapes, but a JPG is a grid of pixels, so there are two ways to get one into an SVG file. You choose under Kind of SVG:

    • Exact puts your picture itself inside an SVG file. It looks identical and works wherever an SVG is accepted, but it is not a real vector: scaling it up shows pixels, and the file is about a third larger than the picture because of the way it is stored.
    • Vectorise traces the picture into coloured shapes. The result scales cleanly, but it looks like a posterised illustration.

Vectorising works for logos, not for photos

Tracing finds areas of similar colour and draws them as shapes. That is excellent for a logo, a drawing or an icon with a few flat colours, and poor for a photo, where the thousands of gradual colour changes turn into hundreds of blotchy shapes and a large file. The tracer works on at most about one megapixel and scales the result back up, so a large image loses fine detail. Make the image simple and high contrast first, and crop away background with crop image.

    When to pick which

Pick Exact when a form or tool asks for an SVG and you just need the image to be accepted. Pick Vectorise when you want to recolour or scale a flat graphic. For a clean source, PNG to SVG usually traces better, because a PNG has no JPG artefacts around the edges.

    Frequently asked questions

Is the SVG really a vector?

Only if you choose Vectorise. With Exact, the picture is embedded as it is and behaves like an image inside an SVG wrapper.

Why does my traced photo look so strange?

Tracing turns areas of similar colour into flat shapes. Photos have smooth gradients and fine texture, which do not reduce well. Use it on logos and line art.

Can I edit the SVG in Inkscape or Illustrator?

A traced SVG can be edited shape by shape. An exact SVG contains one embedded image that you can move and scale, but not edit as shapes.

    Is my JPG uploaded?

No. The SVG is made in your browser, so the JPG never leaves your device. Photos are often private, and here they stay that way. There is no limit on file size or number of files, apart from your device's memory.
