Title case converter

Turn a headline into title case: the main words get a capital, small words like "the", "of" and "and" stay lowercase, and acronyms stay in capitals. The text is processed in your browser and nothing is uploaded.

How it works

  1. Paste your text

Type or paste the text in the left box, or open a .txt file. No text to hand? Click Example.

  2. Instant result

The result appears as you type. Change the options and see straight away what changes.

  3. Copy or download

Copy the result with one click, save it as a file or use it as input for a next step.

How it works

the journey of the ice cream to the sea becomes The Journey of the Ice Cream to the Sea.

  • The first word of every line, and the first word after a colon, full stop, question mark or exclamation mark, always gets a capital.
  • Small words are kept lowercase: a, an, the, and, but, or, nor, for, so, yet, as, at, by, in, of, on, to, up, via and per. Untick the option to capitalise them as well.
  • Acronyms in capitals (NASA, BBC) are left alone. Untick that option to convert them too.

Each line is treated as a separate headline.

An example with a subtitle

the lord of the rings: the return of the king becomes The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. The word after the colon starts a new part of the title, so The gets a capital there although it is a small word.

Style guides differ

Title case has no single standard. This tool follows the common newspaper style, in which short prepositions and conjunctions stay lowercase. If your style guide capitalises words of four letters or more, or has other rules, adjust the result by hand. To capitalise every word regardless, use capitalize each word. For a sentence-style headline, see sentence case.

Frequently asked questions

Which words stay lowercase?

The articles a, an and the, the conjunctions and, but, or, nor, for, so, yet, and the short words as, at, by, in, of, on, to, up, via and per. The first word of a headline always gets a capital.

Why did iPhone become Iphone?

The tool capitalises the first letter of a word and lowercases the rest, so mixed-case brand names such as iPhone, eBay or McDonald's lose their inner capitals. Fix those by hand, or use [capitalize each word](/en/text/capitalize-each-word) with the option to leave the rest as it is.

Does it follow AP, Chicago or MLA style?

It follows the common newspaper approach with the short words above. Those guides differ in details, for example in how they treat prepositions of four letters or more, so check the result against your style guide.

Can I convert several headlines at once?

Yes. Put each headline on its own line. Every line is treated as a separate headline, and the first word of each line gets a capital.
