Two modes
- Letters of each word:
Hello big worldbecomesolleH gib dlrow. - Order of the words:
Hello big worldbecomesworld big Hello.
Example with punctuation
In letter mode Hello, world! becomes olleH, dlrow!. The comma, the exclamation mark and the spaces stay where they were; only the words themselves are flipped.
Uses
- Puzzles where readers must flip each word back to read the message.
- Word games and riddles that need the words in reverse order.
- Checks of how your software handles reversed input.
The two modes are different from reverse text, which flips the entire text including word order, and from reverse lines. For a puzzle with scrambled letters rather than reversed ones, use randomize text.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between the two modes?
*Letters of each word* flips every word in place: `Hello big world` becomes `olleH gib dlrow`. *Order of the words* keeps each word as it is and reverses their order: `world big Hello`.
What happens to punctuation?
In letter mode, punctuation and spaces stay where they are, so `Hello, world!` becomes `olleH, dlrow!`. Only the letters and digits of each word are flipped.
Does it reverse the line order too?
No. Each line is handled on its own, so the lines stay in their original place. To reverse the order of lines, use [reverse lines](/en/text/reverse-lines).
Is it the same as reversing the whole text?
No. [Reverse text](/en/text/reverse-text) flips the entire text, so the word order reverses too. This tool lets you keep the word order and flip only the letters, or the reverse.
