Remove vowels from text

Delete every vowel from your text and keep the consonants: Hello World becomes Hll Wrld. The text is processed in your browser and nothing is uploaded.

How it works

  1. Paste your text

Type or paste the text in the left box, or open a .txt file. No text to hand? Click Example.

  2. Instant result

The result appears as you type. Change the options and see straight away what changes.

  3. Copy or download

Copy the result with one click, save it as a file or use it as input for a next step.

Example

Hello World, Café Mýth! Ørsted becomes Hll Wrld, Cf Mýth! rstd. Accented vowels go as well, and ý stays because Count Y as a vowel is off. Tick it and Mýth becomes Mth.

Why remove vowels?

  • Puzzles and word games: guess the words from the consonants.
  • Disemvoweling: a way to shorten text or hide it from a casual glance. Dropping vowels was also an old habit in short messages (txt mssgs).
  • Testing: see how software handles text that has lost its structure.
  • Teaching: show how much of a word the consonants carry, in languages such as Arabic and Hebrew that mostly write consonants.

Combine with other tools

Remove the consonants instead with remove consonants. To scramble the result, use randomize text, and to turn it inside out, reverse words.

Frequently asked questions

Is y a vowel?

It depends on the word, so there is an option. By default y is kept as a consonant; tick *Count Y as a vowel* to remove it too, so `Myth` becomes `Mth`.

Are accented vowels removed?

Yes. é, ü, å, ø and similar letters count as vowels, so `Café` becomes `Cf` and `Ørsted` becomes `rstd`.

Does it work on Greek or Cyrillic?

No. The tool recognises the Latin vowels a, e, i, o and u. Vowels in other alphabets stay in the text.

How many vowels were removed?

The note under the result gives the count, so `Hello World` reports 3.
