Options

  • Count Y as a vowel: by default y is removed as a consonant. With the option ticked it stays.
  • Also remove digits and punctuation: leaves nothing but vowels and spaces.

The note under the result shows how many characters were removed.

Ideas

  • Puzzles: guess a word or title from its vowels.
  • Language fun: compare the vowel patterns of related words.
  • Testing: check how your application deals with strings that are mostly gone.

For the opposite, see remove vowels. The result can be reversed with reverse words or scrambled with randomize text, and remove punctuation clears the marks first.

Frequently asked questions

Which characters count as consonants?

The Latin letters that are not vowels: b, c, d, f, g, h and so on. Y is a consonant unless you tick *Count Y as a vowel*. Digits, punctuation and spaces are not consonants and stay by default.

What does "Also remove digits and punctuation" do?

It keeps only the vowels and the spaces. `Hello World, Café 123!` becomes `eo o aé ` instead of `eo o, aé 123!`.

Do accented vowels survive?

Yes. `é` is a vowel, so it stays. Accented consonants such as `ç` or `ñ` are removed like their plain versions.

What are the vowels left behind good for?

Mostly for puzzles and for seeing the rhythm of a word. The vowel pattern of a language is a quick way to compare spellings.
