vCard QR code generator

Turn your contact details into a QR code for your business card, website or email signature. When someone scans it, their phone offers to save you as a new contact. Fill in the fields and the code appears straight away.

Error correction

Higher stays readable when the code is damaged or partly covered, but makes it busier.

How it works

  1. Type your text or link

The code appears immediately as you type.

  2. Choose the settings

Size, colours and other options; the preview changes straight away.

  3. Download

As a PNG for a website or a document, or as an SVG for print.

How it works

  1. Fill in the fields you want people to have: First name, Last name, Company, Job title, Mobile, Work phone, Email, Website, an address and a Note. Only a name or a company is required.
  2. The code updates as you type. Open View the vCard details to see exactly what is in it.
  3. Download the QR code with Download PNG or Download SVG, or the contact itself with Download .vcf.

What is in the code

The code holds a vCard 3.0, a plain text format that every phone and mail program can import. The example contact Jane Smith of Example Ltd gives:

BEGIN:VCARD
VERSION:3.0
N:Smith;Jane;;;
FN:Jane Smith
ORG:Example Ltd
TEL;TYPE=CELL:+44 7700 900123
EMAIL;TYPE=INTERNET:jane@example.com
END:VCARD

N holds the name in parts and FN the name as people say it. Phones need both; the tool writes them for you, and falls back on the company name if there is no person. Commas and semicolons in your text are escaped, so a company called Bakker, Smit & Co; BV stays one company. The address fields are combined into a single ADR line.

Keep the code easy to scan

A vCard holds far more text than a web address, so the code is busier. This one is 146 bytes and 49 × 49 modules. Fill in only what you need, because every extra field makes the squares smaller. Print it at least 2 × 2 cm, and test it on your phone before you print in bulk.

The details live in the code itself: if your number changes, make a new code. Everything happens in your browser. To start a message instead of saving a contact, use the email QR code generator or the SMS QR code generator. To put your logo in the middle of the code, use the QR code generator with logo.

Frequently asked questions

Which fields are required?

Only a name or a company. If both are empty the status line says "Enter at least a name or company." and no code is made. Everything else is optional, and a field you leave empty isn't written into the code at all.

Why is my code so dense, and can I make it simpler?

Every filled-in field adds bytes, and a vCard also carries its own structure. The default card with a name, company, mobile number and email is 146 bytes and makes a 49 × 49 grid; adding an address and a website makes it noticeably larger. Leave out what people don't need, keep *Normal (15%)* error correction and the squares stay big enough to scan.

Does the contact get saved straight away?

The phone's camera offers to add the contact and shows the details first, so the person scanning confirms. What is offered differs a little per phone and per scanner app.

What is the .vcf file for?

It is the same contact as a file. *Download .vcf* is handy for e-mailing your details or importing them in Outlook or a contacts app, where a QR code doesn't help.

Are my details uploaded or stored?

No. The code and the .vcf file are made in your browser from what you type, so your phone number and address are never sent to a server.
