Merge PDF files

Combine several PDF files into one document. Drag your files into the box, put them in the right order and download the merged PDF. It all happens in your browser, so nothing is uploaded and a confidential document never leaves your computer.

Click Merge and download. Everything happens in your browser.

    How it works

    1. Drag your PDFs into the box, or click it to choose them. You can add more files later.
    2. Each file appears in a list with its page count and size. Drag a file to move it, or use the โ†‘ โ†“ buttons.
    3. Don't want a file after all? Click โœ• to remove it.
    4. Give the new file a name if you like. Without one it is called merged.pdf.
    5. Click Merge and download. When it's done, the status line reports the result, for example "Done: 12 pages, 340 KB."

The button stays off until there are two usable files, and the status line says "Add another PDF to merge." while there is only one. With two or more it shows the total, such as "3 files, 12 pages in total".

What is copied, and what isn't

Only the pages are copied, unchanged. Text stays selectable and searchable, images keep their resolution and the page sizes stay as they were, so an A4 page and a landscape slide can sit in the same file. Things that belong to a whole document, such as bookmarks, are not carried over, so a long report may need its table of contents checked afterwards.

What goes wrong, and what the tool says

    • A password-protected PDF is marked in the list and left out. Save a copy without protection and add that.
    • A file that isn't a PDF is marked "This is not a PDF file."
    • A damaged PDF is marked "We can't read this PDF file (damaged?)". Opening it in a PDF viewer and saving a fresh copy often fixes it.

    Typical jobs

Putting a cover letter, CV and certificates into one application. Joining scanned pages that came out as separate files. Adding receipts behind an invoice made with the invoice generator. If the result needs pages moved, turned or removed, open it in reorder PDF pages. If it is too big to e-mail, shrink it with the PDF compressor.

    Frequently asked questions

    Does merging lower the quality?

No. The pages are copied into the new file as they are, so text stays selectable and images keep their quality. Nothing is converted or compressed. The merged file is roughly as big as the originals added together.

What if one of my PDFs is password-protected?

That file is marked "Password-protected; open it and save it without protection first." and left out of the merge. Open it with its password, save or print a copy without protection, and add that copy.

Is there a limit on the number of files or pages?

The tool sets none. Because the work happens in your browser's memory, very large files, hundreds of megabytes together, can be slow or fail. Merging in two steps, or making the files smaller first with the [PDF compressor](/en/files/pdf-compressor), helps.

Can I merge Word files, images or other formats?

No, only PDFs. A file that isn't a PDF is marked "This is not a PDF file." Convert the document to PDF first, with the export or print-to-PDF function of the program that made it.

    Are my files uploaded?

No. The PDFs are read and merged in your browser with a library that runs on your own device, so confidential contracts, invoices or IDs never leave your computer.
