How much text do you get?
A sentence has 6 to 15 words, a paragraph 4 to 7 sentences, which makes about 60 words. Below the box the tool counts the result for you:

With Words you get exactly that many words, in one line that starts with a capital and ends with a full stop. Ten words with the classic start read: "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet consectetur adipiscing elit velit enim." Switch the classic start off and the same ten words begin with "Cillum laboris nibh…".
What is lorem ipsum for?
Lorem ipsum is dummy text that looks like Latin. Because nobody reads it, people look at the layout of a design and not at the words. That makes it useful for checking how a template copes with a long paragraph, a short one or a wall of text, and for filling a mock-up before the real copy exists. Pick the unit that matches the slot: Words for a headline or button, Sentences for a card description, Paragraphs for an article.

Frequently asked questions
Is it real Latin?
Not quite. Lorem ipsum goes back to a passage in Cicero's *De finibus bonorum et malorum* from 45 BC, but it has been cut up and scrambled over the centuries, so it only looks like Latin. This tool draws from a list of 77 of its words and builds sentences of 6 to 15 words, so no sentence it makes is a quotation, and nobody can read meaning into it.
Why does the text stay the same when I change an option?
The text comes from a seed, so changing the number or the unit gives you more or less of the same text instead of a new one. That keeps your layout comparisons honest. *New variant* picks a new seed and so a different text.
How do I get paragraphs wrapped in HTML?
Tick *Paragraphs as <p> tags* with the unit on *Paragraphs*. Each paragraph then comes out as `<p>…</p>`, separated by a blank line, ready to paste into a page.
