HTML to Markdown converter
Paste HTML and get clean Markdown: headings, emphasis, links, lists, images and code are converted. The conversion runs in your browser and nothing is uploaded.
How it works
-
Paste your text
Type or paste the text in the left box, or open a .txt file. No text to hand? Click Example.
-
Instant result
The result appears as you type. Change the options and see straight away what changes.
-
Copy or download
Copy the result with one click, save it as a file or use it as input for a next step.
What is converted
<h1>Title</h1><p>This is <strong>bold</strong> and <a href="https://example.com">a link</a>.</p> becomes:
# Title
This is **bold** and [a link](https://example.com).
Choose the heading style: # Heading (ATX, the most common) or a heading with ==== underneath (setext). Lists (also nested), block quotes, code blocks and horizontal rules are converted too, and scripts and styles are dropped.
What is not converted
HTML tables have no counterpart in this converter: each cell becomes its own paragraph, so check tables after pasting. Strikethrough markers and task-list checkboxes are not produced either.
Other directions
Pasting from a web page or Word document instead of HTML code? Try rich text to Markdown. To turn Markdown into HTML, use Markdown to HTML. To drop the formatting entirely, use HTML to text.
Frequently asked questions
Are tables converted?
Not as Markdown tables. The cells of an HTML table come out as separate paragraphs, one per cell, so rebuild a table by hand or use a Markdown table generator for it.
What about strikethrough and checkboxes?
Strikethrough is not converted: `<del>old</del>` leaves plain `old`. Headings, bold, italic, links, images, code, quotes, rules and nested lists are converted.
Which heading style should I choose?
`# Heading` (ATX) is by far the most common. The `====` underline style (setext) only exists for levels one and two, so use it only when your project asks for it.
Does it handle a whole web page?
It converts any HTML you paste, but scripts and styles are dropped and layout elements have no Markdown equivalent. For a real page, paste only the article part.
