Encrypt text with a password
Encrypt a note or message with a password. The result is a block of text you can send anywhere; only someone with the password can read it. Everything runs in your browser, so neither your text nor your password is uploaded.
How it works
-
Paste your text
Type or paste the text you want to encrypt, or the encrypted text you want to open.
-
Choose a password
The text is encrypted in your browser with AES-256. Remember the password well: without it the text cannot be recovered.
-
Share the code
Copy the encrypted text and send it. The recipient opens it here with the same password.
How it works
- Enter your text and a password. The tool encrypts with AES-256-GCM, the same standard used by banks and messaging apps.
- The key comes from your password with PBKDF2 (SHA-256, 600,000 rounds), which makes guessing passwords slow.
- A fresh random salt and IV are used every time, so encrypting the same text twice gives different results.
- GCM also seals the text against tampering: if a single character changes, decryption fails instead of giving wrong text.
Format of the result
The output is Base64 of a version byte, a 16-byte salt, a 12-byte IV and the encrypted text with its 16-byte authentication tag. Because of that, only this tool, or code written for the same format, can open it.
Keep in mind
There is no way to recover the text without the password. Use a long, unique password (the tool warns you if it is shorter than 10 characters) and share it through a different channel from the encrypted text. To read the result, use decrypt text. To generate a strong password, use the password generator. For an old-fashioned puzzle code that is not secure, see ROT13.
Frequently asked questions
Is this really secure?
The text is encrypted with AES-256-GCM, the standard used by banks and messaging apps, and the key comes from your password through PBKDF2 with 600,000 rounds. The security therefore depends mainly on your password: pick one of at least 10 characters.
What if I forget the password?
Then the text cannot be recovered, not even by us. There is no reset, because the password is never stored or sent anywhere.
Why does the encrypted text look different every time?
A fresh random salt and IV are used for each encryption, so two encryptions of the same text never match. Each version opens with the same password.
How should I send the result?
The encrypted block can go in an e-mail or a chat. Share the password through a different channel, such as a call, never in the same message.
