Decrypt text with a password

Paste text that was encrypted with the encrypt text tool, enter the password and read the original. The decryption happens in your browser, and neither the text nor the password is uploaded.

Direction

How it works

  1. Paste your text

Type or paste the text you want to encrypt, or the encrypted text you want to open.

  2. Choose a password

The text is encrypted in your browser with AES-256. Remember the password well: without it the text cannot be recovered.

  3. Share the code

Copy the encrypted text and send it. The recipient opens it here with the same password.

How it works

Enter the encrypted text and the same password that was used to create it. The tool derives the key with PBKDF2 and decrypts with AES-256-GCM, all in your browser.

You can be sure of the result: AES-GCM authenticates the data, so if the password is wrong or even one character of the encrypted text was changed, you get an error instead of garbled text. When it works, the note confirms that the text was checked and hasn't been altered.

What can be decrypted

Only text made with the encrypt tool on this site, because it uses a specific format (a version byte, a salt, an IV and the encrypted data, written as Base64). A wrong password can't be told apart from damaged text, so both give the same message.

Troubleshooting

Copy the encrypted block completely, with no spaces added at the start or end and no line breaks inside it. Check the password for capitals and keyboard layout. If the text was compressed first, run the result through decompress text. Need a strong password for next time? Use the password generator.

Frequently asked questions

What happens if the password is wrong?

You get an error instead of garbled text. A wrong password cannot be told apart from damaged text, so both show the same message.

What does "Decrypted and verified" mean?

AES-GCM authenticates the data. That message confirms the password was right and not one character of the encrypted text was changed on the way.

Can I decrypt text from other programs?

Only text made with [encrypt text](/en/text/encrypt-text) on this site, because it uses a specific format: a version byte, a salt, an IV and the encrypted data in Base64. Other programs use different formats.

What error appears for text that is not Base64 at all?

*This is not encrypted text from this tool (not valid Base64).* Check that you pasted the whole block without extra characters.
