Example
Hello world has 11 characters including the space and 10 without. The longer sample, I'm a well-known café owner 👍🏽. Really? Yes!, an empty line and Second paragraph here., has 67 characters in total and 56 without whitespace. The line under the number says how many spaces there were.
When it is used
- Translation work that is priced per character without spaces.
- Assignments that set a minimum or maximum without spaces.
- Comparing the real length of two texts that use different spacing.
What counts
Letters, digits, punctuation, symbols and emoji each count as one. Only whitespace is skipped. For the count with spaces, which most limits use, see character count with spaces, and for everything at once the character counter.
Taking spaces out
To get a text without any whitespace, run it through remove whitespace. To count one letter or word, use count specific characters.
Frequently asked questions
Which characters are left out?
All whitespace: spaces, tabs, line breaks and similar characters. `Hello world` has 11 characters but 10 without spaces.
Why would a limit leave out spaces?
Some translation rates, assignments and exam instructions count characters without spaces to measure the real amount of text. Always check which rule applies to you.
How many spaces does my text have?
The line under the main number states it: in the example above, 9 spaces. The difference with the count including spaces also includes line breaks.
Do punctuation marks and digits count?
Yes. Only whitespace is left out. Digits, punctuation, letters and emoji all count.
