How it works

  1. Paste your text

Type or paste your text in the box, or open a .txt file.

  3. Read the result

The estimated reading and speaking time are shown too.

Example

I'm a well-known café owner 👍🏽. Really? Yes!, an empty line and Second paragraph here. is 67 characters including spaces and line breaks. Without the spaces it would be 56, the difference being 9 spaces and 2 line breaks.

Where spaces count

  • Form fields and database columns with a maximum length.
  • Social media posts, text messages and push notifications.
  • Meta titles and descriptions, which are cut off after about 60 and 155 characters.
  • Assignments and abstracts that ask for a number of characters including spaces.

Trimming a text

When you are over the limit, the quickest savings are spaces and empty lines. Use remove double spaces, then check again. To cut the text into pieces of a fixed length, use wrap text or split text. For the full set of totals, see the character counter.

Frequently asked questions

Do spaces always count?

In most limits, yes: forms, social posts and text messages all count every space. Some places count the characters without spaces, for which there is the [character count without spaces](/en/text/character-count-without-spaces).

How are line breaks counted?

One line break is one character here. Some systems store a line break as two characters (carriage return plus line feed), so a limit on the other end may count slightly more.

What happens with double spaces?

Each space counts. If you want to trim, use [remove double spaces](/en/text/remove-double-spaces), which can shorten a text noticeably.

Can I check several limits at once?

Yes. The page also shows words, lines and the size in bytes next to the main count, so one paste serves for most limits.
