Barcode generator

Type a number or text, choose the barcode type and download the barcode as a PNG or SVG. Check digits are worked out for you. The barcode is drawn in your browser and nothing is uploaded.

Type of barcode

How it works

  1. Type your text or link

The code appears immediately as you type.

  2. Choose the settings

Size, colours and other options; the preview changes straight away.

  3. Download

As a PNG for a website or a document, or as an SVG for print.

Which barcode type?

  • EAN-13: the standard for products in shops. Enter 12 digits and the 13th, the check digit, is added; or enter all 13 and the tool checks it.
  • EAN-8: a short product code for small packages: 7 or 8 digits.
  • UPC-A: product codes from the US and Canada: 11 or 12 digits.
  • Code 128: text and digits without accents, ideal for order numbers and shipping labels.
  • Code 39: capital letters, digits and - . $ / + % and space. Common in industry and logistics.

If a value doesn't fit the type (a letter in an EAN, or a wrong check digit), the tool explains what to change. Choose the colours, show or hide the text under the bars, and download as PNG or scalable SVG.

The EAN-13 example

The tool starts with 8712345678906: twelve digits and the check digit 6. The first two or three digits identify the country or organisation that issued the prefix, and the check digit catches typing errors when a cashier keys in the number.

Good to know

A barcode for retail products needs a company prefix from GS1; a code you generate here is fine for internal use, inventory, tickets and tests, but not for selling in shops. Make QR codes with the QR code generator. To see the digits of a number as bits, there is text to binary.

Frequently asked questions

How is the EAN-13 check digit calculated?

Add the digits in odd positions, add three times the digits in even positions, and the check digit is what brings the total up to a multiple of 10. For `871234567890` that is 33 + 3 × 27 = 114, so the check digit is 6, giving `8712345678906`.

What can go wrong with the input?

A letter in an EAN, the wrong number of digits or a wrong check digit. The tool says what to change instead of making a code that will not scan.

Do I need to register a barcode to sell a product?

For retail, yes: product codes come from GS1, with your company prefix. A code made here is fine for internal use, inventory, tickets and tests, but not for selling in shops.

Which type should I use for order numbers?

Code 128. It handles letters, digits and symbols without accents, and is compact. Code 39 is its older, longer cousin, still common in industry and logistics.
