Division calculator
Enter the dividend and the divisor and see the answer as a decimal, and for whole numbers also with remainder, as a simplified fraction and as a mixed number.
Decimals may use a point or a comma. A sum works too, such as 2^10 or sqrt(2).

Remainder, fraction or decimal?
Take 22 ÷ 7:
- With remainder: 7 goes into 22 three times (3 × 7 = 21), with 1 left over: 3 remainder 1.
- As a fraction: 22/7, or as a mixed number 3 1/7.
- As a decimal: about 3.142857. The digits repeat forever, so the answer is rounded.
When the division comes out exactly, such as 1 ÷ 8 = 0.125, you get the exact value without rounding.
Dividing by zero
Dividing by 0 is not possible: no number times 0 gives 22. The calculator tells you so instead of showing "infinity". Dividing fractions? Use divide fractions.
Long division in steps
Take 1,000 ÷ 7. Seven fits 142 times in 1,000, because 142 × 7 = 994. That leaves 6, so the answer is 142 remainder 6, or 142 6/7 as a mixed number, or about 142.857143 as a decimal. The calculator shows these steps for whole numbers.
Repeating decimals
1 ÷ 3 is 0.333… and 1 ÷ 7 is 0.142857142857… forever. A fraction in lowest terms ends in a finite decimal only when its denominator has no prime factors other than 2 and 5, as in 1/8 = 0.125 and 3/20 = 0.15. In every other case the digits repeat, and the answer shows a rounded value.
Remainders in practice
Packing 100 items into boxes of 12 gives 8 boxes with 4 left over, so you need 9 boxes. The remainder tells you what doesn't fit and the quotient how often it does. For common factors, see the GCD calculator; to divide with fractions, use divide fractions.
Frequently asked questions
What is a remainder?
What is left over when the divisor doesn't fit a whole number of times. 22 ÷ 7 is 3 remainder 1, because 3 × 7 = 21 and 22 − 21 = 1.
Can I divide decimals?
Yes, but then you get the decimal answer only, without a remainder or fraction. Remainders are shown for whole numbers.
What happens when I divide a negative number?
The quotient is rounded towards zero, so −7 ÷ 2 gives −3 remainder −1, and the sign of the remainder follows the dividend.
Why can't I divide by zero?
No number multiplied by 0 gives anything but 0, so there is no answer. The calculator says so instead of showing infinity.
