A logo from print or a scan
TIFF is the format of print shops, scanners and photo archives, so a company logo or a drawing often arrives as a TIFF. Browsers cannot show TIFF and an ICO is the format a favicon and a Windows shortcut need. This page reads the TIFF on your device and builds the icon from it. Your artwork and scans stay private, which matters for client files and unpublished designs.
From a big file to a tiny icon
A print TIFF is often 3000 pixels wide or more, while a favicon is 16 or 32 pixels. A few things help the result at that scale:
- Crop to the logo first. Scans come with margins, a page edge or a bit of the table. Crop image with the 1:1 ratio keeps only the part that should become the icon.
- Pick a clear shape. A letter or a simple mark survives the step to 16 pixels. A detailed drawing turns into a smudge, however good the source is.
- Check the preview. The icon is built from the image as this page shows it, so look at the thumbnail and the size summary before you download.
- Keep a lossless copy. If you want the same artwork as a normal image for the web, use TIFF to PNG as well.
Multiple pages and layers
A TIFF can hold more than one image, for example a thumbnail or the pages of a scan. The converter uses the largest image in the file. If the file has several scans, you only get the biggest one, so save the one you want as a separate TIFF first.
What to do with the ICO
Use 16, 32 and 48 pixels for a website and add 256 for Windows. The file belongs in the root of your site as favicon.ico. The iPhone and manifest icons are separate PNG files, and how to make a favicon lists all of them. If you need a smaller version of the same artwork for those, shrink image scales it by a percentage.
Frequently asked questions
Is my TIFF uploaded?
No. A TIFF can be tens of megabytes, which is exactly why it is handled on your device: the file is read and converted in your browser and never sent anywhere. There is no limit on the file size or the number of files, apart from your device's memory.
My TIFF has several pages. Which one is used?
The largest page is used. Some TIFF files contain a thumbnail or several scans; the converter picks the biggest image in the file. To use another page, save that page as its own file first.
Is the transparency of my TIFF kept?
If the TIFF has an alpha channel, yes. Most scans and print files do not have one, in which case the icon gets the solid background of the image.
My TIFF is huge. Should I shrink it first?
It is not needed: every icon size is scaled down from the original. A very large file can take a moment to open, and cropping it to the logo first with Crop image makes the conversion faster and the result better.
Can I use the ICO for my website?
Yes. Save it as favicon.ico in the root of your site and add a link element to the head of your pages. See the favicon guide for the full set of files.
