File to Base32 encoder
Encode a file or text as Base32 in your browser: nothing is uploaded, there is no limit on how many you encode, and the output follows the standard (RFC 4648), with or without = padding.

What is Base32?
Base32 uses only the capital letters A–Z and the digits 2–7. That alphabet has no lookalikes such as 0 and O, and it survives systems that ignore letter case, such as file names on some systems, DNS labels and the secret keys shown next to two-factor QR codes. Base32 text is about 60% larger than the original, more than Base64 (33%).
Where Base32 is used
- Two-factor authentication. The secret behind a TOTP code, shown next to the QR code in an authenticator setup, is Base32.
- Case-insensitive systems. DNS labels, some file systems and codes that people read aloud or type by hand.
- Readable codes. The alphabet leaves out
0,1,8and9, so it has no confusion between0andO, or1andI.
Base32 versus Base64
Base32 is less compact: it makes data about 60% larger, while Base64 adds 33%. In return it uses only capitals and digits, so it survives being typed, spoken and lowercased. If space matters more than readability, use file to Base64.
Padding
The standard adds = signs so that the length is a multiple of 8. Many applications, such as authenticator apps, expect no padding, and accept the code without the signs. Untick the padding option to get that form.

Frequently asked questions
Why does Base32 only use capitals and the digits 2 to 7?
That alphabet avoids look-alike characters such as 0 and O, and survives systems that ignore letter case.
Do I need the = padding?
The standard includes it, but many applications leave it out. Switch the option off if the place where you use the code does not want it.
Is Base32 the same as the secret in my authenticator app?
Yes, those secrets are Base32 text. This tool encodes bytes; it does not generate authenticator codes.
Is my file uploaded?
No. The encoding happens in your browser.
