What is counted
Every line break starts a new line, so a text with three line breaks has four lines. Under the main number the tool shows how many lines contain text and how many are empty (only spaces count as empty).
Example
The text a, an empty line, b, a line with two spaces, c and a final line break has 6 lines: 3 with text and 3 empty. You also get characters, words, sentences, paragraphs and reading time.
Where it helps
- Log files and exports: how many entries are there?
- CSV and lists: the number of rows, or the number of items, one per line.
- Code and config files: the length of a file in lines.
Cleaning up afterwards
To clean a list afterwards, use remove empty lines or remove duplicate lines, and sort text alphabetically to put it in order. For the other totals, see the character counter and the word counter.
Frequently asked questions
Why does a text with a final line break have one more line?
Every line break starts a new line, so `a`, a line break, `b` and a final line break makes three lines, the last one empty. The line under the number shows how many lines contain text and how many are empty.
Are wrapped lines on screen counted?
No. Only real line breaks count. A long paragraph that wraps in the box is still one line.
Is a line with only spaces empty?
Yes. A line with only spaces or tabs is counted as empty in the breakdown.
How do I count the rows of a CSV file?
Open or paste the file and read the number of lines. Subtract one if the first row holds the column names.
