JSON to text converter

Turn JSON into plain text you can read or paste anywhere, as path: value lines, an indented outline or just the values. The JSON is processed in your browser and nothing is uploaded, so API responses with private data stay on your device.

How it works

  1. Paste your text

Type or paste the text in the left box, or open a .txt file. No text to hand? Click Example.

  2. Instant result

The result appears as you type. Change the options and see straight away what changes.

  3. Copy or download

Copy the result with one click, save it as a file or use it as input for a next step.

Three styles

For {"name":"One café","open":true,"prices":[2.5,3],"address":{"city":"London","postcode":"SW1A 1AA"}}:

  • Path: value: name: One café, open: true, prices[0]: 2.5, prices[1]: 3, address.city: London and address.postcode: SW1A 1AA, one line per value.
  • Indented: an outline with nested items indented under their parent; arrays use - item.
  • Values only: One café, true, 2.5, 3, London and SW1A 1AA, one per line.

Uses

Reading a long API response without braces and quotes, putting data into an e-mail or document, or taking the values out for a spreadsheet.

Errors in the JSON are reported clearly. To check or tidy JSON first, use the JSON formatter; to turn it into a spreadsheet, use JSON to CSV, and for a configuration file JSON to YAML. For the other direction, use text to JSON.

Frequently asked questions

What does the path style look like for arrays?

Array items get an index in square brackets: `prices[0]: 2.5`, `prices[1]: 3`. Nested objects are joined with dots, as in `address.city: London`.

What is the indented style for?

A readable outline. Objects become `key: value` lines and arrays become `- item` lines, nested items indented under their parent, which reads like a simple YAML file.

What does "values only" give?

Just the values, one per line, without keys. Handy for pulling the data out of a response without its labels.

What if my JSON is invalid?

The tool reports what is wrong and where, rather than guessing. Check or tidy the JSON first with the [JSON formatter](/en/code/json-formatter).
