Two kinds of gallon
- US gallon: exactly 3.785411784 litres.
- UK (imperial) gallon: exactly 4.54609 litres, about 20% bigger.
50 litres is 50 ÷ 3.785411784 = 13.21 US gallons, or 50 ÷ 4.54609 = 11.0 UK gallons. Petrol in the US is sold per US gallon.

A price of 3.60 dollars per US gallon is 3.60 ÷ 3.785 ≈ 0.95 dollars per litre. Multiply by the exchange rate for your own currency. The converted price makes it easy to compare with the pump at home.

Which gallon should I choose?
Use the US gallon (3.785 L) for American fuel prices and recipes, and the UK gallon (4.546 L) for British fuel economy and old British recipes. The choice is above the field, and the result changes by about 20%.
How do I convert litres per 100 km to mpg?
US mpg = 235.215 ÷ (L/100 km), and UK mpg = 282.481 ÷ (L/100 km). A car that uses 7 L/100 km does 33.6 mpg in US gallons and 40.4 mpg in imperial gallons.
How many litres is a gallon of milk in the US?
3.785 L, exactly 3.785411784 L. A US gallon is 128 US fluid ounces.
Why do two countries have different gallons?
The US kept the old English wine gallon, while Britain redefined its gallon in 1824 as the volume of 10 pounds of water. The US gallon is the smaller of the two.
